In the small village of Fallika you will see the Byzantine monastery of Panahrantou. It was built on the northern slopes of Mount Gerakones during the 9th century by emperor Nikiforos Fokas. Rare ecclesiastic heirlooms are kept here and are worth seeing. Every visitor is impressed by the collection of icons, manuscripts and many other artefacts.
Agia Thalassini is a graphic church built on a rock at the entry to the harbour of Chora and constitutes one of the most characteristic parts of the island.
The monastery of Agios Nikolaos is located in Sora, 6km from the village of Apikia. Two priests from Agio Oros built it at the end of the 16th century, on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church. It is protected by high walls and houses important ecclesiastic heirlooms including the icon of Saint Nikolaos from 1770, the wooden temple of the church and the exquisite murals.
The monastery of Zoodohos Pigi or Agia, as the locals call it, is close to Batsi, the famous tourist resort on the island, and it is the largest on the island. The church has an impressive wooden temple, while in the monastery’s museum you will see rare manuscripts, icons and so on..
The monastery of Saint Marina is located in the village of Apikia. According to the historic files of the monastery Koutroumousiou, it was built during the Byzantine period, in the times of Paleologos (around 1325). Among the heirlooms to be seen is the icon of Saint Marina dated from the 17th century and that of Panagia Dakrirooussa.
The monastery of Tromaxioi is built in the south west corner of the island and is devoted to the Holy Mary. The monastery has been closed since the middle of the 19th century.
