Monastery of Michael Argagelou

The monastery of Michael Argagelos is, between the villages of Astrida and Aliki. It is a women’s monastery dedicated to the guardian of the island, Michael Argagelos. The monastery was built in 1080 and is considered one of the most important sights of Thassos. What makes this church special is a piece of “Timios Hlios” kept in its interior as well as the monastery’s panoramic view.

Church of Theotokos

The church of Theotokos is located in the homonym village; it was built in 1833 and is dedicated to Virgin Mary. The church is famous for its impressive handmade chancel screen that was made in 1880.The interior of the church has many old icons of the 14th – 17th century, old coins of Virgin Mary and the icon of Panagia Pantoblepousa.

Monastery of Batopedio

The monastery of Batopedio or Kalogeriko is located in the port’s centre and is a landmark of Thassos capital. It is a two-storied building that was built in 19th century and nowadays accommodates variables cultural activities.

The church of Agios Athanasios is located in the walls of the Genoan Kastro (Castle). Kastro is a traditional village of Thassos. According to a sign-board the church was built in 1804 and is believed to have been built upon the ruins of an old castle that was in the area.

This small church is dedicated to Agios Nicolaos and is in the city centre. It was built in 835 A.D. on the ruins of an ancient temple; it is considered one of the oldest churches of the island.
