History of Hydra Greek Islands Saronic Greece

According to archaeological research, the island has been in existence since the Neolithic Era, about 3000-2600 B.C.

The first residents of the island were called Dryopes in the 13th century B.C.

Two centuries later the Dories arrived and the Dryopes disappeared from the island taking with them the last evidence of life.

From 1460 onwards the first colony on Hydra begins with the orthodox Albanians who fought on the side of Venetians and were hunted by the Turks. They found a safe place to live in Hydra.

On the eve of the Greek revolution the Island of Hydra was economically sound and in terms of war, ready. It had 120 battleships, 5.400 men and 2.400 cannons.

The Revolution in Hydra was officially declared on the 16th of April 1821 by Antonio Ekonomou. The island contributed to the naval efforts by sacrificing human lives, ships and money.
