Travel Guide Lefkada Island Ionian Greece

History of Lefkada Greek Islands Ionian Greece

Lefkada is of great historic interest as according to archeological findings it is inhabited since Neolithic Age. Its history dates back to the end of the 7th century, when Korinthians came to the island. Lefkada participated in the sea battle of Salamina, in the battle of Platees and the Peloponnesian War.

In 338BC Macedonians, along with King Philip, Great Alexander’s father, conquered the island.

In the beginnings of the 2nd century BC Romans took up Lefkada.

In 1293 Nikiforos, the archon of Epirus’ Despotato, gave the island to Ioannis Orsinis as a marriage portion.

In 1479 Turkish possessed the island. Lefkada is the only Ionian island under the Turkish possession.

In 1810, English prevailed in the Ionian Sea.

In 1815, after the Convention of Paris, Ionian Islands became independent and were named “United State of the Ionian Islands”, which was under English commission. In 1864, Ionian Islands became part of the rest of Greece.
