The town of Chios

Chios East Aegean Greek Islands Greece

The town of Chios lies in the centre of the eastern coast of the island. It is the capital of the prefecture having approximately 25.000 inhabitants. The modern city is a bustling port and a shopping centre, not so picturesque or especially geared for foreign tourists. It is though a city that offers several diversions to those who like to visit a very traditional place. Not very far from the beach, can visitors discover the roads and the traditional narrow streets.

The village of Mesta is the most distant of the medieval villages but is also the best-preserved. Its form and architecture is totally unique. The whole village has been designed and built as a labyrinth, in order to prevent the pirate raiding parties from easily reaching the most important buildings located in the centre of the village.
