According to mythology Nisyros is a creation of the god of the sea. The myth says that Poseidon during a battle with Polifotis cut off part of Kos and threw it at the giant.

This rock fell on the giant and created Nisyros. It is said that Polifotis is not dead but still lives in the bowels of the island. Wounded as he is, each time he moans or sighs, an earthquake or a volcanic eruption occurs on the island. This is how mythology justifies the existence of the volcano on Nisyros and the close relations it has with Kos even today.
