According to archaeological researches, Alonissos was inhabited from the prehistoric era.
In the 2nd century B.C. the island were ruled by the Romans.
Afterwards the island was taken over by the Vizantium. During that period of time the fortress walls were built in the city.
In 1207 Alonissos and Sporades were given as a property to a Venetian Family called Gyzi.
In 1583 Alonissos and the other islands of Sporades passed in Turks.
The Turkish domination kept till 1830 when Alonissos as well as the rest of Sporades became part of the new free Hellenic State.
