HYDRA > OVERVIEW

Hydra Greek Islands Saronic Greece

Hydra is one of the islands of the Saronic Gulf and has about 2,750 permanent residents. As the land is barren, the main occupations are tourism and fishing. It is an exceptionally picturesque cosmopolitan island. As with the other islands of the Saronic Gulf it is a popular destination for the Athenians, especially at weekends.

The island has an important naval history. Renovated mansions, the old picturesque harbour with the battlements and cannons, museums, monasteries and the naval base compose a picture of an island that reflects its historical importance.

The unique town of Hydra, designated a landmark, stretches out on two rocky hills and has many traditional houses with tiled roofs, blue doors and windows.

The main characteristic of the island is that there are no wheeled vehicles, cars etc. The only means of transport are donkeys making Hydra picturesque and quiet.
