The village, Chora, has existed for many centuries as the capital of the island. It is built in the middle of a valley, far from the sea because of pirates. It is the part of the island where traditions are kept alive.
It was linked to Kalymnos up to 535 A.D. when a large earthquake took place separating the two islands. The capital Pothaia, as we know from discoveries, was lost at the bottom of the sea. Later Telendos constituted a separate kingdom.
The graphic settlement of Panormos is built in a lusciously green location and is surrounded by pebble beaches. The region has been inhabited since ancient times.
This is the largest of the islands that belongs to Kalymnos. It extends for 15 km, with a lot of low hills and small valleys with abundant trees. Streets do not exist and so there are no cars.
