The Church of the Kera Madonna is 10 km from Agios Nikolaos. A three arched church with a central dome and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church was built in stages the first stage being the central area with dome; later stages added the chapels of Agia Anna and Agios Antonios.
The architecture and interior decoration characterise it as one of the most remarkable on Crete. The interior murals date from the 14th and 15th centuries and are exceptional.
The 15th century Abbey of Toplou was destroyed by an earthquake in 1612, but it was rebuilt with Venetian economic aid. It was destroyed and abandoned after the Ottoman invasion of Crete. In 1704 it was declared sacred. During the Ottoman occupation the Abbey functioned as a school. A school of mutual teaching was founded in 1870.
The abbey is a sacred fortress of 800 m² and has three storeys divided into the abbot’s residence, cells, guest rooms, kitchens and warehouses. The church has two aisles, the northern aisle dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the southern is dedicated to St John the Theologian. The abbey bell tower is adorned with relief crowns and crosses with inscriptions dated 1558.
The church of the Vigliotissa Madonna was built during the 14th century and is about 2 km from Neapoli. The interior has murals of the period.
The Kapsa Monastery is located on the rocky slopes between Makri Gialos and Goudoura. Its church is partly built inside a cave. It is believed that the monastery was founded in the 15th century and is dedicated to Agios Ioannis the Precursor.
In 1471, it was destroyed by pirates and was abandoned. Later it was refurbished by Joseph, a monk, and he added an extension to the church dedicating it to the Holy Trinity.
The Faneromenis Madonna Monastery is located about 8 km from Sitia beside the entrance to All Saints Gorge. The monastery was founded about 14th century and so named as an icon of the Virgin Mary was found in a cave close by. The murals date to 1455 and are blackened by the fire smoke of the Turks. Signs show that it was renovated in 1624.
